The University of Arizona Libraries (UAL) is reimagining its strategic planning, assessment and analytics approaches through the application of design thinking among other principles in order to establish more user-centered methods to this work. Our refreshed approach leads us to recruit an enterprising, creative, and engaged Librarian/Specialist to lead and coordinate our assessment and analytics efforts.
The Analytics and Assessment Librarian/Specialist coordinates, expands, and enhances data analytics and assessment activities across UAL. The person in this position plays a key role in supporting strategic planning efforts, helping to ensure the Libraries’ approach remains in alignment with University of Arizona priorities. The Librarian/Specialist gathers and provides compelling evidence of the critical contributions the Libraries make to the academic, research and outreach missions of the University. The Librarian/Specialist works in partnership with all UAL departments, and with campus, regional and national entities, to lead evidence-based assessment and analytics initiatives, including working with campus demographic and instruction-related data, to achieve strategic objectives and inform decision-making related to Libraries work.
This is a continuing-eligible or continuing track, academic professional position. Duties & Responsibilities
- Collaborates with our leadership teams (Deans Working Group and Cabinet) to align assessment and analytics efforts with UAL strategic planning;
- Represents UAL to the UA Assessment Leadership Team; works in close partnership with other campus groups engaged in assessment and analytics work, including but not limited to University of Arizona University Analytics and Institutional Research (UAIR), Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, and Academic initiatives and Student Success (SAEM/AISS), and the Office of Instruction and Assessment;
- Synthesizes the results of data collection and assessment efforts, often with campus partners such as UAIRS and SAEM/AISS, to convey and illustrate, in compelling fashion, the impact of library services and resources on constituencies and in advancement of UA priorities;
- In partnership with leaders throughout UAL (deans, department heads, managers), collects the necessary evidence to help leadership make informed decisions related to the deployment and allocation of resources, including personnel capacity;
- Convenes expertise within UAL and, as needed, with campus partners to consider the contexts, conditions and means by which library generated data will be used for assessment and analytical purposes;
- Presents and visualizes quantitative data in a way that is meaningful to stakeholders; uses qualitative data to foster empathy for our users and to tell the library’s story;
- Leads the implementation and evaluates the use of both internal and externally-sourced surveys and related macro-level assessment instruments (NSSE, IPEDS, LibQual, MINES for Libraries, ClimateQual, etc.);
- Designs, plans for, and implements outcomes and impact-oriented assessment and analytics strategies (e.g. data mining and analysis, focus groups, surveys, contextual inquiry, transactional data gathering);
- Promotes and shares expertise in assessment and data analysis with library staff in an ongoing program to encourage a culture of assessment, empathy, and data-informed decision making throughout UAL;
- Proactively seeks out and implements new methods of assessment to better guide strategic planning and decision making;
- Coordinates internal communication regarding assessment and analytics efforts;
- Provides consultations and support for library staff engaged in assessment and analytics work (e.g. identifying and clarifying assessment priorities, goals and objectives, and methodologies; strategies for data collection, management, analysis and preservation);
- Conducts training and creates learning opportunities for library staff in the gathering, use and dissemination of assessment data and related information;
- Establishes ethical practices regarding gathering and storing of personal data related to assessment and analytics; oversees the gathering, deposition and preservation of data in standardized formats and their uploading to and maintenance in preservations systems;
- Represents UAL to tri-university assessment efforts (Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University); and,
- Develops and maintains Libraries dashboards, including data and graphical interfaces.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Demonstrated knowledge of assessment and analytics trends and tools available to and commonly used by academic research libraries and/or the broader academy.
- Successful experience in assessment, data collection, analysis and use, and data representation in academic research library environments or other academic settings.
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both written and verbal. Ability to interact effectively with clients, colleagues, campus administrators, and community leaders.
- Working knowledge of statistical software and data visualization/representation applications used for analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data.
- Experience designing and organizing assessment initiatives, and the ability to convey data/evidence in a compelling and creative fashion.
- Knowledge of student success and learning outcomes assessment and analysis in academic libraries or other higher education settings.
- Demonstrated familiarity with and appreciation for the ethical and responsible use of data in libraries and/or other academic environments.
- Ability to work in a highly collaborative and inclusive environment, one that values and leverages the benefits of diverse perspectives.

- Master’s in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or relevant advanced degree.
- Knowledge of and experience providing assessment and analytics services.
- Demonstrated experience with data analysis and organization.
- Certification and/or academic coursework in research design and methodology.
- Evidence of the ability to achieve continuing status (equivalent to tenure), including contributing to the information/library profession or other relevant professional discipline, and to fulfilling the responsibilities of a continuing-eligible faculty member through service and scholarship.
- Successful leadership of a library data analytics program and/or assessment program or equivalent in another academic field, with commensurate experience.
- Experience with national library and/or higher education assessment programs (LibQual, ClimateQual, IPEDS, NSSE, etc.).
- Experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and approaches to assessment (statistical analysis, ethnography, survey design, evaluation design, etc.).
- Demonstrated success in coordinating and leading project management efforts in a frequently changing environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in ACRL Proficiencies for Assessment Librarians and Coordinators.
- Experience in training, facilitation, and collaborative decision making.
